Teacher Awards

About the Teacher Awards

The BHP Foundation Science and Engineering Teacher Awards recognise outstanding contributions made by classroom teachers to science education.

Teacher finalists are selected from around Australia. Each Science Teachers Association (STA) is invited to nominate one teacher, chosen for their excellence in teaching, their support of open-ended student investigations and their suitability to represent their state or territory. CSIRO Education and Outreach will nominate one teacher from the Creativity in Research, Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST) Awards program, selected on the same criteria. If you would like to nominate a teacher, contact your local State or Territory Science Teacher Association for further information.

The BHP Foundation Science and Engineering Teacher Awards are open to Australian permanent residents who are primary or secondary teachers of science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) currently teaching in the classroom (minimum teaching load 50%). To be eligible, the teacher must not have been nominated for these Awards in the previous two years. Only one application per STA is permitted and the STA President must sign a statement to verify the sole application.

Each nominee will be:

  • expected to participate in the Virtual Teacher Best Practice Seminar on Thursday 3 December 2020 where they will be recognised as a Teacher Finalist in the BHP Foundation Science and Engineering Awards
  • showcased on scienceawards.org.au
  • invited to participate in the Student Awards VIP Evening Event on Thursday 10 December 2020
  • invited to have their ideas showcased on the scienceawards.org.au website
  • given priority access for selected CSIRO/ASTA professional development opportunities that may arise in 2021
  • be invited to participate as an observer in the (virtual) Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in May 2021.
